Imaan Walji
To set the scene: It was April of 2020, and everyone was getting used to a new normal during the beginning phase of the global pandemic. The sheer lack of hand sanitizer and toilet paper at the local grocery store was sending everyone into a frenzy.
I was going through my own crisis. I was graduating from McMaster University with a Political Science degree only to find myself wanting to pursue a deep passion and interest I had for writing, communications, and digital media . . . and so it began. I made the decision to take every opportunity I could get to gain experience and add to my repertoire.
Since then, I have freelanced with small businesses, worked with an NGO, and volunteered with a variety of organizations. Additionally, I have refined my skillset through online classes, and attained relevant certificates through various platforms. Through these opportunities, as well as those that I was involved with during my undergrad, I exhibited initiative and feel that I am ready to further my career path. I am excited to work alongside and learn from other passionate and experienced individuals. Take a look at my work below!

WoodGreen Community Services
As a Communications Assistant with WoodGreen Community Services, I drafted and reviewed a variety of communications documents such as blog posts, press releases, media lists and internal key messaging documents. I also assisted with social media posts and briefing notes. This opportunity allowed me to expand my skillset and experience, making me well-versed with media relations strategies. Further, I have expanded my toolbox with new social scheduling platfrorms such as Sprout Social.

At AuxCity, I supported and led all social media and marketing strategies and created online content in the form of social media posts, blog posts, and other promotional materials, such as email campaigns. I became familiar with social media management fairly quickly and this resulted in an average follower gain of 3% per week, as well as lead generation.

Podcast
I recently have been inspired to create a podcast called Living in Paradise with Imaan Walji. It is still in its beginning phases with only a couple of episodes published as of right now. However, I have a list of episode ideas that I am excited to create, and I also am very excited to build out the socials for this podcast. Fresh Magazine
At Fresh Magazine, I acted as the lead on the Pursuit:365 social media campaign and was responsible for taking content from articles and transforming them into digestible social media content. I also supported a “31-day giveaway” that was conducted in partnership with various local businesses throughout Canada. Alongside the social media work I conducted, I also wrote an article that was published in the magazine.

Aga Khan Park
As a Marketing Coordinator, I create and schedule content for our social media channels, attend events in-person to curate a live feed, and am also in the process of updating content on our website. This position has really allowed me to understand what it means to build a brand from the ground up, considering that the park only launched online in October 2021. There have been a variety of learning opportunities through this role. For instance, I am able to sit in on meetings regarding event planning and have had the chance to learn about various brand management strategies such as colour theory and typography. This opportunity is also allowing me to become well-versed with building a website on square space as well as tracking website traffic through the use of UTM links.

Ismaili CIVIC
Ismaili CIVIC is an organization put forward by the Ismaili community with the goal of performing civic duties in our local communities. As the national marketing lead, I was in charge of creating content for our national social media channels, in order to promote Ismaili Civic Day as well as any initiatives being put forward by the organization. I created a social media campaign for each initiative and shared it with the team, so that regional leads were able to re-share the content. Below, I have also included a link to an email campaign I created, to promote Ismaili Civic Day in 2021.

Conversion Copywriting (LinkedIn Learning)
Through this course, I learned the basic steps of conversion copywriting, starting with an overview of the conversion copywriting process and delving deeper into each step. The course included insights on how to conduct research to find the voice of the customer (VOC), finding the "what" and the "how" in your VOC, and how to use your VOC in your copy. Further, I learned how to optimize copy through various frameworks, got tips and guidelines on writing a first draft for web and email copy, and learned about numerous persuasive copywriting formulas to convert prospects. Additionally, the course emphasized the importance of validating and experimenting with your final draft and explored multiple ways to do so.

Learning to Write Marketing Copy (LinkedIn Learning)
This course explored the fundamentals of copywriting and covered the following topics:
